Eyeless in Gaza

Anthony Beavis has watched life from a safe distance. Now he must ask what that distance has cost. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY DAVID BRADSHAW Anthony Beavis is a man inclined to recoil from life. His past is haunted by the death of his best friend Brian and by his entanglement with the cynical and manipulative Mary Amberley. As Anthony looks back over the experiences that shaped him, he begins to realise that his distance from the world has not been a sign of intellectual honesty. It has been a form of moral cowardice. That recognition forces him towards a new way to live. Eyeless in Gaza is considered by many to be Huxley’s definitive work of fiction. A classic literary novel about memory, guilt, responsibility and spiritual change, it examines the gap between intelligence and action, and the danger of treating life as something to be observed rather than entered. For readers of twentieth-century classics and philosophical fiction, this is Huxley at his most searching.
