This compact book (it measures 5.25x9.25"), presents 100 paintings chosen from nine of the big museums in New York the Brooklyn Museum, the Cloisters, the Frick Collection, Guggenheim, Hispanic Society of America, Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, Neue Galerie, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Reproductions are in color but are quite small (typically in a three or four-inch portion of the page). Each is thoroughly discussed and described in a couple pages of text, and biographical timelines of the painters and a brief listing of contemporary works are included.
